Continuity Camera lets you turn your iPhone into an external video input device for your Mac. The requirements are short: iOS 16 or later, any iPhone introduced in 2018 or later (the XR era), and any Mac capable of running macOS 13 Ventura or later.
Make sure this is the case on your iPhone Settings > Generally > AirPlay and Handoff has Handoff enabled and Continuity Camera enabled. If the iPhone is nearby on your Mac, you can select it by name in any app that supports standard video input, such as FaceTime or Zoom.

When the continuity camera is active, you can pause or disconnect it. But you can’t force it to start.

However, I and many others have seen glitches since the iOS 17 betas came out, and they still occur in the release version:
- The iPhone will not appear if it is not properly connected via USB as the Continuity Camera can be used via Wi-Fi or USB.
- When this option is selected, Continuity Camera iPhone will appear as a black screen in a macOS app such as FaceTime.
The solution is to flip switches (how frustrating!).
- If you have Standby enabled, the side-sleep always-on mode starting with iOS 17, try disabling it or turning it on and off Settings > Stand by.
- If this fails, try switching the continuity camera using the above setting.
- If that doesn’t work, try toggling the commit at this point.
While working through solutions, I found that only the handoff switch worked for me. The error of working as a continuity camera persisted when I restarted my iPhone until I turned the Handoff switch off and on again. Others have found that switching to standby mode does the trick, while still others have disabled and re-enabled the continuity camera.
