Google Search Ranking Volatility Tools Cool

For the first time in ages (see what I did there?), Google Search’s third-party volatility tools have cooled down to normal volatility levels. The chatter has been a bit more typical over the last week, that’s not to say some haven’t seen a dip or rise in their search visibility, but overall it seems like things have calmed down a bit.

I mean, the entire month of December was pretty hot, and until the first week of January 2025, it kept getting warmer. But finally, the tools show calming, cooling weather over the last few days.

Let me fill you in on the last month or so:

The November 2024 core update ended in December, then a new December 2024 core update started and ended and also the December 2024 spam update started and ended in December. That’s not to say anything has calmed down since the last official Google algorithm update of 2024 was completed. That’s not the case, it’s insanely volatile. The crazy thing is that we expect a lot more core updates in 2025. Last weekend we had this strange Google local ranking bug that Google has kept quiet about.

But now the situation is calming down.

As you can see, virtually all instruments have shown significant calming and lower volatility since Saturday, January 11th.

The SEO chatter still continues, but it appears to be significantly more limited than in previous weeks. So things seem to be calming down.

Is this the calm before the storm? Do you need to prepare for something big? I mean, we expect more core updates in 2025 than in previous years.
