Google’s Sundar Pichai envisions a future with Bard at your side
Google’s AI chatbot, Bard, is attracting attention with its remarkable capabilities and hinting at a future where technology and creativity converge.
In a recent 60 Minutes interview, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and AI experts discussed Bard’s achievements such as creating stories and poetry in a matter of seconds.
This article covers the key takeaways from the interview, including Pichai’s take on how AI advancements will impact various aspects of our lives.
The problem with chatbots: hallucinations & misinformation
Bard’s strength lies in analyzing and predicting speech patterns after being trained on a vast amount of web content.
Unlike Google Search, Bard doesn’t look for answers online, but rather generates answers based on its language model.
Despite Bard’s capabilities, the AI technology presents challenges.
A significant problem is “hallucination,” or Bard’s ability to confidently make up information. For example, Bard wrote an essay on inflation and recommended five books that didn’t exist.
This issue isn’t unique to Bard, Pichai notes:
“Nobody in this field has solved the hallucination problems yet. All models have this problem.”
When asked if hallucinations are a solvable problem, Pichai says, “I think we’re going to make progress.”
Misinformation is another problem as AI can create credible fake news, images and videos that could harm society on a large scale.
To address these issues, Bard has a “Google it” button for fact checking and uses security filters to block hate speech and prejudice.
Automation, job changes and workforce development
Pichai believes that AI will impact all industries and every product in every company will feel its impact.
He shares the following example:
“That’s right. AI will affect everything. So, for example, you could become a radiologist. If you think five to ten years from now, you will have an AI employee with you. Let’s say you have 100 things to do. It can You might say, “These are the most serious cases, you need to look at them first.” Or when you’re looking at something, you might see a message that says, “You may have missed something important.”
The AI revolution will undoubtedly lead to automation and workplace transformation.
Some jobs may decline as new job categories emerge, and many existing jobs will change as they incorporate AI technology.
Pichai mentioned that “knowledge workers” such as writers, accountants and software developers could be affected.
Pichai envisions a future where AI helpers enhance the way people work and learn, acting as “super-powered assistants.”
Exploring emerging properties and potential of AI
Another challenge to address with AI is “emergent properties,” which refer to systems that exhibit unexpected capabilities.
How this happens remains a mystery, but it happens.
For example, a Google AI program could understand the Bengali language even though it wasn’t trained to understand it.
Pichai shares the following story:
“Of the AI problems we’ve talked about, the most mysterious is called emergent properties. Some AI systems teach themselves skills you wouldn’t have given them credit for. How this happens is not well understood. For example, a Google AI program adapted itself after being prompted in the Bangladeshi language, which it was not trained to understand.”
Approaching AI modestly, Google plans to gradually introduce AI technology, giving society the opportunity to adapt and provide feedback.
The company aims to weigh the potential benefits and risks of AI.
In total
Chatbots like Bard can create content and provide human-like interactions that represent opportunities and challenges.
As we enter the age of AI-driven automation, digital marketers are advised to keep up with AI trends and use AI technology to improve their strategies.
AI can provide valuable insights, automate repetitive tasks, and help personalize marketing campaigns for a better user experience.
However, it is important to consider the ethical aspects and potential risks of AI such as misinformation and hallucinations.
As the AI revolution continues, the demand for accountable, informed, and adaptable marketers and SEO professionals becomes more critical than ever.
