How Sun Chemical achieved infrastructure cost savings of over 50% during acquisitions

Sun chemical, a member of the DIC Group, is a leading manufacturer of packaging and graphics solutions, color and display technologies, functional products, electronic materials and products for the automotive and healthcare industries. With combined annual revenue of more than $8.5 billion and more than 22,000 employees worldwide, DIC Group companies support a diverse group of global customers.

The problem:

“Our use of Microsoft 365 has increased dramatically following our recent acquisition,” said Stuart Hudson, senior manager of global IT infrastructure, strategic infrastructure programs – AP, at Sun Chemical. “We hired 2,200 additional employees in over 30 international locations who were big supporters of Microsoft SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. Since then, more and more of our users have followed suit and we now have massive amounts of Microsoft 365 data documenting our products, manufacturing processes, standard operating procedures and more.”

Sun Chemical relies on fast access to Microsoft 365 data, and with users spread across the globe, the data needs to be available 24/7. Previously, the company relied on the Recycle Bin feature to recover accidentally deleted Microsoft 365 data – an unreliable, short-term approach.

“We had to rely on the Recycle Bin's 93-day retention period to recover files, and that was only if the Recycle Bin had not been emptied by the user,” Hudson said. “We also often lost access to important data when employees left the company after their devices were wiped and accounts were deactivated. As the risk of cyberattacks increased and our business expanded, it was time to take control of our Microsoft 365 data once and for all.”

The solution:

Sun Chemical selected Veeam data cloud for Microsoft 365 to ensure 24/7 access to critical Microsoft 365 data and enable employees across all locations to be more productive.

“We chose Veeam Data Cloud over products from vendors such as Commvault, Cohesity and Barracuda,” said Hudson. “We ended up doing five PoCs. Veeam’s solution has come out on top, offering great functionality, cost-effectiveness, an intuitive interface and the all-important differentiator: a vendor willing to work with us on an ongoing basis.”

Today, Sun Chemical protects all of its Microsoft 365 data with Veeam. The company can now keep backups indefinitely instead of just 93 days – a change that has paid off more than once.

“We are fortunate that we became heavy users of Microsoft 365 shortly before Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 was deployed, as we were asked more than once to restore files older than 93 days,” Hudson said. “It also ensures that we don’t lose institutional knowledge just because an employee leaves the company. We can easily search our Microsoft 365 backups to find important data.”

By leveraging a backup-as-a-service (BaaS) solution, the company minimized administrative burdens for its lean IT team.

“Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 frees us from purchasing and managing our backup infrastructure, resulting in significant cost savings,” said Hudson. “If we had had it in our last major acquisition, we estimate we could have purchased half the file servers.”

Sun Chemical benefits from responsive Veeam support to help get the most out of the technology and provide feedback on product features.

“Veeam is always there when we need help or want to hear our opinion,” said Hudson. “For example, when we reported that being able to see a specific filter would make life easier for our local administrators, they implemented this change within a few days. This level of responsiveness is rare to find from a provider.”

With Veeam protecting its mission-critical Microsoft 365 data, Sun Chemical is better positioned to take advantage of new opportunities. By ensuring rapid file recovery, the company has improved its ability to recover from a cyberattack.

“Sun Chemical is a truly global company: every day, employees around the world rely on Microsoft 365 apps to share important data,” said Hudson. “Veeam Data Cloud protects this important part of our environment, helps our employees work more productively and gives us an additional layer of cyber resilience.”

The result:

Achieved 100% coverage of Microsoft 365 data and transitioned from 93-day retention to unlimited retention

“It was a huge relief to implement Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 and eliminate our reliance on the recycle bin,” said Hudson. “We are now confident that every byte of Microsoft 365 data is backed up and can be restored with one click, which is a huge advantage.”

Offers potential infrastructure cost savings of up to 50% or more on acquisitions

Sun Chemical expects Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 to significantly reduce the cost of future acquisitions and address potential growth constraints.

Providing responsive support and development resources 24/7

“A responsive vendor was one of the most important factors in the selection process that led us to Veeam,” said Hudson. “I’m pleased to say the relationship continues to thrive.”
