How to get Apple Intelligence in the EU

With the publication of iOS 18.1 Beta 2Apple has apparently given English speakers in the European Union access to Apple Intelligence, which was not possible in previous versions.

General function of Apple Intelligence
One of the reasons Apple initially limited regional access to Apple Intelligence was the fact that only US English was supported. However, in the second beta version 18.1, Apple Intelligence localization options now include Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Singapore, the US, the UK, and Australia.

The other reason why Apple Intelligence was not available in the EU until now was that Apple has geo-blocked access within the bloc, probably due to regulatory issues related to the Digital Markets Act. At first glance, these issues persist and it is not yet clear whether they will be resolved by the time iOS 18.1 is released in October. But at least for now, there seems to be nothing stopping users in the EU from testing Apple Intelligence in beta if their device supports it.

Supported devices

Apple Intelligence includes a number of features, including composing texts and emails, automating actions across different apps, generating images, summarizing documents and texts, and more. However, these features require a lot of processing power on the device, so before you do anything, you should check if your device is compatible. iPhone users will need either an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 15 Pro Max to run Apple Intelligence, while only iPads with M1 or newer Apple silicon processors are compatible.

Install beta software

If your device is supported, you must first do the following: Install the iOS 18.1 developer beta for your device. If you followed the instructions in the linked article and your device is running the latest beta, follow these steps on your iPhone or iPad.

  1. Open Settingsand then continue tapping to General ➝ Language & Region.
  2. Knock Add language.. and select English (US).
  3. Knock region and select United States. (Note that this will not affect your App Store regions or purchases.)
