Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri lists his top priorities for 2023, which will focus on expanding content distribution and making new connections.
Earlier last year, Mosseri said Instagram’s priorities were working on video, messaging, transparency and control, and helping developers make a living.
Mosseri believes Instagram has made great strides towards those goals, but admits there have been some false starts.
There’s no doubt that Mosseri is referring to the full-screen redesign launched over the summer, which received so much backlash that Instagram reverted to the old UI.
Looking ahead to 2023, Mosseri’s vision for the coming year is to bring people together about the things they love.
To achieve this, Instagram will focus on three things:
- Inspiring creativity
- Explore something new
- Sparkling Connections
Instagram hit a new milestone last year, surpassing two billion monthly active users. That means the company has even more responsibility for everyone who uses Instagram on a daily basis.
Here you can read more about how Mosseri plans to achieve these three goals.
1. Inspiring creativity
Instagram will always unite people through their common interests, which will never change. While Instagram’s methods may evolve as technology advances, its core concept of bringing people together through common interests will not.
In 2023, Instagram will continue to focus on inspiring people to be creative, which is the idea that Instagram was born from.
2. Discover something new
Instagram will continue to help users find new content. And no, this doesn’t just refer to videos.
Instagram’s plans to focus more on videos are well known. Still, Mosseri reiterates the company’s commitment to helping people find images, featured content from people they don’t follow, and content creators outside of their network.
“Instagram should be a place where you discover amazing things every time you use it,” says Mosseri.
3. Spark connections
Instagram wants to encourage connections between users through the content they find on the app.
The company plans to focus on this aspect to differentiate itself from other social media platforms and encourage interactive, conversation-enhancing experiences rather than passive consumption.
Creators are not happy with the state of Instagram
Instagram has a lot of work to do this year to keep creators happy.
The comments below Mosseri’s announcement suggest that users are not happy with the way the algorithm is distributing content.
Creators say their growth has stalled and they can’t reach new audiences no matter how hard they try to adapt to Instagram’s video push.
On the other hand, regular users don’t see enough of the content they go to Instagram for. They complain that they see more content from people outside their network than from friends and family.
Instagram needs to act fast to fix these issues before people find an alternative that suits their needs.
