ios – Stuck notification icon in iPhone app

I have a very strange problem with an app on my iPhone 14 Pro (IOS 17.5.1).

The app accepts all kinds of notifications and normally works like any other app. However, some time ago (I think a few weeks ago) I received a notification and after reading and deleting it, the red badge with the “1” stuck on the app icon. There is always a pending notification on the app icon, but there are no notifications anywhere, not even in the app itself (which has its own internal list of notifications).

What I tried:

  • Force close the app. Nothing changes.
  • Restart the iPhone; nothing changes.
  • Disabling badge notifications (or notifications altogether) for the app; the badge disappears, but when I turn notifications back on, it reappears.
  • Last but not least (and this is what I find strangest), Uninstalling the appBut when I reinstalled it, for some unknown reason the icon appeared again with the red “1”.

I would consider this a bug in the app, but how can it persist after I uninstalled and reinstalled the whole app? I can confirm that all application data was deleted when I removed the app because I had to go through the initial setup again after reinstalling. However, it looks like the phantom notification is still stored somewhere.

During this time, I also received other notifications from the app, but the number on the red badge always remained “1”.

Any idea how to fix this?

Addendum: The app is the management app of my mobile operator (TIM, Italy). When you first install it, it asks you for your login details and it detects your SIM card. I had to do this after reinstalling it to confirm that the app data had indeed been deleted when I uninstalled the app. However, the notification icon immediately reappeared after I reinstalled the app, even before I had completed the setup (where you have to give your consent to receive notifications).
