High-quality gaming controllers can be expensive, especially if you pair them with a console or subscription. The Nenotoh Switch Controller offers a smooth gaming experience that won’t break your budget.
Throughout COVID-19 Due to the pandemic, gaming is becoming increasingly popular. However, regardless of platform, a controller may be required to operate the game.
Apple Arcade, launched in 2019, opened the door to a more immersive gaming experience on Apple devices. This also included offering console-like games that can be played on your device iPhone, iPad, MacAnd Apple TV – with or without controller.
Additionally, Apple continues to push the idea of gaming on its devices.
In macOS SonomaThey introduced Game mode. This automatically gives games top priority on your Mac’s CPU and GPU, while reducing background task load and latency on wireless accessories.
While Apple Arcade doesn’t require a top-of-the-line controller for a great gaming session, it’s still nice to have one that can keep up with your gaming. With the Nenotoh Switch Controller you can enjoy a great gaming experience without breaking the bank.
Nenotoh Switch Controller Review – A well-known design
The Nenotoh Switch Controller is designed like other simple gaming controllers. But in contrast to expensive controllers with a slimmer exterior, this one offers a predominantly black design with smaller color elements incorporated throughout.
Measuring 6.18 x 4.33 x 2.24 inches and weighing 0.44 pounds, the Switch Controller is easy to hold and portable to take with you when you want to play on the go.
On the front are standard controls found on most controllers, including a D-pad, ABXY buttons, left and right thumbsticks, and LED lights at the bottom center to indicate connection mode.
There are five buttons in the top center, each allowing different actions. There is an “H” button to go home and power the controller, a plus and minus button, an auto button marked with a “T,” and an “O” button to pick one up Screenshots.
If the Switch controller stops responding or won’t pair, there is a small hole in the top right of the screen on the back that you can insert a pin into to restart it.
At the top of the controller are the familiar left and right buttons as well as the ZR and ZL buttons.
There’s also a USB-C port on the top that allows you to charge the controller and play games via a wired connection. You can use an existing cable or the included USB-C to USB-A cable.
Inside the Switch controller is a motor that causes the controller to vibrate to simulate in-game movement. However, the controller did not vibrate in the games we played. This only happened when we identified it in the game controller settings.
There is also a 550mAh polymer lithium battery in the Switch controller. This will give you around ten hours of playback time, but it will take around 3.5 hours to fully charge.
The bottom row of LED lights indicates the status of the battery.
- Powered off, charging and the light flashes = Charging but not fully charged
- Turned off, charged, lights off = Fully charged
- Powered on, charging and the light is flashing = Charging but not fully charged
- Powered on, charged, lights on = Fully charged
If you are using the Switch Controller and the LED light starts flashing quickly, the controller needs to be charged soon. However, to know the battery percentage, you can see it in the game controller settings MacOS.
If you don’t use the Switch Controller for five minutes, it will automatically enter sleep mode.
Nenotoh Switch Controller Review – A Responsive Gaming Experience
Playing with the Switch controller was no different than playing with any other controller, although it may even be better than some others. Thanks to the strong connectivity and low latency, gaming was surprisingly smooth and responsive.
Pressing the “H” button activated pairing and connectivity mode. The controller is in connection mode when the LED lights flash slowly one above the other. Additionally, if you hold down the “H” button longer, the lights will flash and move faster to indicate that the controller is in pairing mode.
Once connected, you can play any game that supports the use of a controller. The Switch Controller connects via Bluetooth 5.0, allowing it to connect to almost any gaming device.
Playing various Apple Arcade games with the controller resulted in a smooth gaming experience with no connection lag. The controller can be about ten meters away from your gaming station, which is more than enough in many cases when gaming.
Thanks to the built-in precise six-axis gyroscope sensors, we were able to execute every turn, jump and glide flawlessly. As a result, we didn’t lose any games due to lag or command stuttering.
A game that tested timing was Temple Run. If you’ve played before, you know that this game is all about making quick decisions while avoiding multiple obstacles.
While the game starts slowly, it gets faster as time goes on. The Switch Controller kept up when it came to making spontaneous decisions in a short space of time.
While the Switch controller worked reliably when playing various games, there were some issues getting it to work with other games that supported controller use.
When playing on a 2022 Apple TV 4K, the controller worked with every supported game. But when playing on a 2022 MacBook AirThe controller didn’t work on the same games that said they supported a controller.
This may be due to the game itself and not the Switch controller, but it still made it unusable. This resulted in us having to use a different method of play or switch to a different game.
Nenotoh Switch Controller Review – A great controller at a great price
The Nenotoh Switch Controller is a great addition to your gaming setup – especially if you have an Apple Arcade subscription. Additionally, its performance is made even more impressive by its price of less than $30.
At first glance, you might think that a lower-end budget controller isn’t any good or, if anything, halfway decent. However, when used in fast-paced games, the Switch controller turns that notion on its head by offering reliable connectivity and low latency.
The controller felt comfortable in our hands while playing thanks to its lightweight and non-slip design. We were able to hold the controller firmly without fear of it slipping and affecting stability in the game.
In addition, the ergonomic design meant that all controls were easy to reach and we didn’t have to break a finger pressing a button.
One downside is that while you get ten hours of use, it takes almost four hours to fully charge. That’s too long for a controller with a 550mAh battery and no screen.
Additionally, the Switch Controller’s default settings cannot be adjusted in macOS Settings, which may be limiting for Mac gamers.
If you enjoy gaming occasionally and are looking for a good controller at a fair price, then the Nenotoh Switch Controller is worth a look. However, if you are a hardcore gamer who plays intense games, you might want to look at a high-end controller for your gaming setup.
