OpenAI disables faulty AI detector

OpenAI has discontinued its AI classifier, a tool used to identify AI-generated text, after criticism of its accuracy.

The termination was subtly announced via an update to an existing blog post.

OpenAI’s announcement reads:

“As of July 20, 2023, the AI ​​classifier will no longer be available due to its low accuracy. We are working to include feedback and are currently exploring more effective text provenance techniques. We are dedicated to developing and providing mechanisms that allow users to understand whether audio or visual content is AI-generated.”

The rise and fall of OpenAI’s classifier

The tool was launched in March 2023 as part of OpenAI’s efforts to develop AI classification tools to help people understand whether audio or visual content is AI-generated.

The aim was to identify whether text passages were written by a human or an AI by analyzing linguistic features and assigning a “probability rating”.

The tool grew in popularity but was ultimately discontinued due to its inability to distinguish between human and machine writing.
