Charts: US Retail E-Commerce Sales Q3 2022

According to the US Department of Commerce Census Bureau (PDF), US retail sales — e-commerce and brick-and-mortar stores — grew to a seasonally adjusted $1,791 billion in Q3 2022, up 0.62% from Q2 2022 , while its e-commerce-only sales rose 2.7% to a seasonally adjusted $265 billion.

The DOC defines e-commerce sales as those for “goods and services where the buyer places an order, or the price and terms of sale, over the internet, mobile device, extranet, electronic data exchange network, email, or other comparable online contracts are negotiated system. Payment can be made online or not.”

The e-commerce share in the third quarter of 2022 was 14.8% of total US retail sales.

Additionally, e-commerce sales grew 10.8% in the third quarter compared to the third quarter of 2021, while total retail sales grew 9.1% over the same period.

According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, US retail sales (including foodservice) increased by 1.3% and 8.3% in October 2022 compared to September 2022 and October 2021, respectively. “Nonstore retailers” — e-commerce, mail order — rose 1.2% and 11.5% over the same periods.
